Speed and Precision Matters

Types Of Handpieces We Repair

High-Speed Dental Handpiece

High-Speed dental handpieces are typically used for rapidly removing tooth tissue with little to no pressure, heat or vibration.  They are usually air-driven and have small heads to increase visibility and accuracy.  These devices run between 40,000 and 400,000 rpm.  All high-speed handpieces use either air or water spray to keep he head cool.  Also, the bur will stop spinning if too much pressure is applied on the cutting surface.  This makes it a very safe and effective tool used by dental professionals.

Low-Speed Dental Handpieces

Low-Speed dental handpieces operate at speeds ranging from 5,000 to 40,000 rpm. They are commonly used for removing cavities and prepping the area for other dental procedures such as fillings and crowns.  Since they operate at a lower speed, they do not require the cooling that is present in high-speed dental handpieces, and typically have a longer lifespan then their high-speed alternatives.

Surgical Dental Handpieces

Two of the more common types of surgical dental handpieces are endodontic and Implant handpieces. Endodontic handpieces are used to prepare and shape canals during root canals. Implant handpieces are designed for all sorts of maxillofacial and oral surgery.

Air vs. Electric

Which is better? That depends on the dental professional’s preference and the nature of the dental work being performed. Electric dental handpieces provide constant speed with a quieter operation that reduces the “drilling” sound. However, the constant power source continues even during turbine failure and can cause irreparable damage. Air driven dental handpieces are noisier, but generally cease rotating without overheating if bearings fail.

The MedPro Repair Perspective

Regardless of which handpieces the dental professional prefers, occasional failure is inevitable and our goal is to be your preferred service provider to restore proper function as quickly and cost effectively as possible.
